AIM
The aim of the industrial visit to TVS was to help students understand the end-to-end process in a manufacturing unit. The application of Quality Circles, Just in time Inventory Management, Quality Compliances, Continuous improvement leading to operational efficiencies were practically presented to students.
OBJECTIVE
- Student experience and understand the functioning of real workstations, plants, machines and systems.
- Opportunity to interact with senior functional experts / supervisors to explain about company functions.
- Company tour to understand the end-to-end process at all levels.
The industrial visit was an Opportunity to have a face to face session with technical or administrative experts of the organization to ask questions and clarify doubts. Before entering the plant standing instructions were given to students as they were entering floor shop of the 4th largest two-wheeler company’s plant. It was also communicated that TVS has another two plants in India One in Mysore (KA) which makes all range of Scooty and another one in Solan (HP) and one overseas plant in Indonesia.
Once the students entered the plant they were informed about the Management strategies followed by TVS and their partnering companies .TVS as a Group has nearly 25 subsidiary companies and also the TVS plant by itself doesn’t make all the parts required, but gets it from OEM (Original Equipment manufacturer) from different companies only a fraction of the total parts are made at the same plant and all the parts are then assembled. The students were taken to the location where Gear box casing is made. The first section were shown the Machine fabrication where some of the major plastic parts were designed and tuned precisely to their specification. The entire unit was completely automated; it uses 3 robots which work continuously and CNC machines. They had two types of conveyor belts, one is the Stop and go belt which operates not too often and other was Continuous belts which works continuously where line assembly of engine is done.
The visit was a great learning opportunity for our students who understood the nuances of manufacturing and quality management systems.
